Donald Trump is expected to win the presidential election by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris

Scripps News and Decision Desk HQ predicted that Donald Trump would win the presidential election, marking a return to power for the Republican.

“It was a movement like no one had ever seen before, and frankly, it was, I believe, the greatest political movement of all time,” Trump told his supporters gathered at an evening of monitoring at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.

Trump locked in victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris after Scripps News Headquarters and Decision Desk projected that Pennsylvania would go to Trump, giving him 19 more electoral votes and putting him at the threshold of 270. Early Wednesday, he also had to win Wisconsin and Nevada, key states.

The victory caps a remarkable political comeback for Trump, who was impeached in the final days of his presidency in 2021. At the time, Democrats and many Republicans criticized Trump for his actions before the riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. , 2021. Trump was indicted this year for his role in the events of January 6. It’s unclear what will happen to the case, which is being prosecuted by the Justice Department, once Trump returns to the White House.

Trump is also expected to be sentenced later this month in a hush money case in New York and he still faces charges in Georgia, stemming from the 2020 presidential election.

The criminal cases apparently did not deter voters, many of whom favored Trump on the economy and immigration, the centerpieces of his campaign.

“We’re going to close these borders,” Trump told his supporters Wednesday morning. “We want people to come back, but they have to come in legally.”

“This day will forever be remembered when the American people took back control of their country,” Trump added.

The 2024 campaign has been anything but easy for Trump. For much of the year, he was favored to beat President Joe Biden in a rematch of the 2020 election. In late June, the two men debated what would be one of the most important in history. After President Biden struggled to clearly articulate his positions, he faced immediate backlash from his party. That would set the stage for the president to drop out of the race and support Harris to lead the Democratic ticket.

In addition to the change in opponent, Trump’s security on the campaign trail was called into question after an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania in July. Trump was shot in the right ear while on stage speaking to a large group of supporters.

A few weeks later, investigators say there was another assassination attempt against Trump. A man was seen pointing a rifle through a fence at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, where the former president was playing golf. The man was eventually arrested without any shots being fired. Both assassination attempts were condemned by both Republicans and Democrats.

The election results still reflect a deeply polarized nation — with many Democrats wondering how the new Trump administration plans to meet the challenges ahead. For supporters, however, it marks a moment of renewed hope for economic prosperity and a government led by a man who says he puts America first.

“Together, we will unlock America’s glorious destiny,” Trump said. “We will achieve the most incredible future for our people.”

Trump added: “I will not disappoint you. America’s future will be bigger, better, bolder, richer, safer and stronger than it has ever been before.”
