“He’s an explosive player for big events”

Spanish tennis great Alex Corretja believes Carlos Alcaraz will be dangerous at the 2024 ATP Finals in Turin as he will arrive with full confidence.

The double Roland-Garros finalist thinks Alcaraz has “learned from the past” and expects him to be “fresher” than he was at last year’s ATP Finals.

Alcaraz will make his second appearance at the ATP Finals at this year’s edition, which takes place from November 10-17.

In his debut at the Year-End Championships at Turn last year, Alcaraz reached the semi-finals, where he lost decisively to an inspired Novak Djokovic.

The 21-year-old Spaniard beat world number 1 Jannik Sinner in a thrilling China Open final last month to clinch his most recent title.

In his two events since Beijing, Alcaraz reached the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters and the third round of the Paris Masters.

In an interview with EurosportCorretja backed Alcaraz’s chances in Turin by saying his ‘explosive’ compatriot was suited to prestigious events like the ATP Finals.

“Alcaraz will arrive in Turin at the right time,” said the former world number 2. “Why? Because he recently won a few hard court tournaments, notably beating Sinner in the final (in Beijing), which always gives a dose of confidence.

“Even though at Paris Bercy he didn’t play his best tennis, the court was a little faster than he likes.

“In the ATP Finals, it’s true that everything is very open, that the groups are very difficult and that everyone arrives very mentally saturated, a little physically affected.

“But I believe Carlos has learned from the past and will arrive a little fresher than last season.

“I trust him, I think he is a happy and explosive player for big events and the ATP Finals are one of them.

“All matches are grand finals and all matches are complicated, but at the same time very tense and very motivating.

“In this I believe Alcaraz is a master and he will struggle like everyone else, but I give him chances.

“I don’t know if it will be this year, but I am convinced that at some point in his career he will triumph in one of these tournaments.”

Alcaraz, currently ranked third, could be drawn into the same group as Sinner in Turin as he will be the No. 3 seed.
