Traffic on I-40 and I-25 impacted due to severe winter conditions

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Heavy truck traffic jams on I-40 blocked traffic near Moriarty and Santa Rosa Friday.

A spokesperson for the New Mexico Department of Transportation said trucks parked on the side of the road and at truck stops overnight began moving Friday. Some drivers say they waited more than two hours between Santa Rosa and Moriarty.

Officials say icy roads also help slow traffic.

Interstate 25 and Interstate 40 were closed Thursday due to a winter storm.

I-40 was closed at Clines Corners and westbound lanes are closed at Tucumcari due to severe winter conditions. Due to the closure, southbound US Highway 285 was also closed at mile marker 290, one mile south of I-25 near Santa Fe. Northbound US 285 traffic was diverted to southbound I-25 due to a closure on that route.

Northbound I-25 was closed from Mile 339, just north of Las Vegas, to Mile 460 through Raton Pass. Southbound I-25 was also closed at mile marker 460.

According to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, law enforcement closed the road due to weather conditions making travel unsafe.

“Like I said, we borrowed equipment from other districts to help us. Mainly District 3 in Albuquerque, but they will be there and all districts will move to 12-hour shifts,” said James Murray, NMDOT Public Information Officer.

NMDOT advises that other roads may be snowy and icy and crews may salt and sand. They also advise you to drive with caution and stay behind snow plows at least 50 feet.

In northeastern New Mexico, US Highway 56 was closed from Springer to the Texas state line, a 94-mile stretch. US 64 was also closed from milepost 350, one mile east of Raton, to milepost 430 in Clayton.

Problems in these areas are snowy and icy roads and zero visibility due to blizzard conditions. Travel is not recommended.

This is what I-25 in Springer and US 64 in Capulin looked like just after 10 a.m. Thursday:
