Gretna man works to bring ‘kick-lock’ invention into compliance

GRETNA, Neb. (WOWT) – Dave Cotton, owner of Gretna-based Extreme Iron Works, says its locking device for inward swing doors is like an additional lock.

He and his son Kyle say it can provide an extra layer of security during a school shooting.

“The main thing our lockdown would do is give first responders more time to get on scene and handle the situation,” Kyle said.

The Cottons told 6 News they have already sold a few to a school in metro Omaha.

But an internet search shows there are several similar devices, and the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office told 6 News that many of them don’t meet fire codes, e.g. for easy outings.

One scenario that worries them is that of an intruder entering through a classroom window while such a locking device is in place, making a quick and simple exit difficult for students and staff.

First responders should also be able to open the door from the outside with a key or other device, even with the locking device engaged.

Dave said he had a tool for that, but said authorities advised him not to show it.

He said he has another tool that can meet ADA requirements for a release mechanism to unlock and unlock the door from 34 to 48 inches above the floor.

However, the fire bureau said this still does not meet the “one action” requirement that the door can still be opened by turning a handle or pushing a panic bar.

Dave said he wouldn’t give up just yet.

“I feel like I’m facing a brick wall and I really want to give up,” he said. “But I can’t give up because it’s not about me. It’s about the children.

He added that he did not know if it was possible to modify some terms of the fire codes to make his device eligible.

Officials told 6 News they understand the need to have safety in place during an active shooting or similar event, but it is not acceptable to “trade” safety for safety. security.
