Fake news is the biggest threat to our democracy

Moving forward, for a democracy (where truth, integrity, honesty, inclusion, the rule of law and peace matter) to thrive and flourish requires must be a complete and honest sharing of real news and ideas, among the entire population, without fake news or conspiracy theories.

In our country, I understand that only about 20% of the population gets their news from reputable news networks and channels. The rest, around 80% – including many young people – get their information on social networks, infested with lies and false news. And they believe it and act accordingly.

This is the greatest threat to democracy and the quest for truth.

If we or our children get our news from social media and not from reputable newspapers or news channels in our areas, we should hardly be shocked or surprised to learn that people are conditioned and controlled to hate and sometimes radicalized.

But here’s the thing: at least in our great state of Maine, we know that if we took the time to reach out and get to know the people on the so-called other side, who are very “different » the way we perceive ourselves, we may well discover many honest, hardworking people with whom we have a lot in common. We can find generous and kind people. We know this. Serendipity.
