Bangladesh Nationalist Party opposes president’s impeachment demand – ThePrint – ANIFeed

Dhaka (Bangladesh), October 27 (ANI): The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), one of the largest political parties in Bangladesh, has raised objections to the demand for impeachment of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, the group led to oust Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, met with BNP leaders on Saturday evening to ask them to support the president’s impeachment demand, but the BNP did not agree.

“The BNP will not take a hasty decision,” said BNP general secretary Mirza Fakrul Islam Alamgir, referring to the president’s impeachment demand.

“We will discuss it on our party forum,” he added.

“Impartial elections should be held as soon as possible after the implementation of election-centric reforms,” Mirza Fakrul told reporters on Sunday.

BNP leaders believe that the president’s resignation would create a constitutional vacuum. “If the president is impeached, it will create a constitutional vacuum in Bangladesh. This will delay the next elections. The BNP has not accepted this demand,” Salahuddin Ahmed, another BNP leader, said earlier.

The anti-discrimination student movement, the group that led to the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, announced a five-point demand, including the resignation of the president, during a rally at the central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on last week. Later, protesters in Bangladesh took over Banga Bhaban, the presidential palace, demanding the president’s resignation.

Protesters walked away from Banga Bhaban after leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement decided to hold talks with political leaders to demand the impeachment of the president.

Mohammed Shaabuddin, known as Chuppu, is the 16th president of Bangladesh. A legal civil servant and politician, he was elected unopposed in the 2023 presidential election on the nomination of the Awami League.

President Shahbuddin, in an interview with Bangla Daily Manabzamin, recently said that he does not have Sheikh Hasina’s resignation letter.

The anti-discrimination student movement demanded the abolition of the constitution written in 1972 and called for the drafting of a new constitution in the context of 2024.

The caretaker government of Bangladesh has banned the Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL), the student organization of the Awami League, party of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, following a demand from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Two months ago, a student movement ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after weeks of protests and clashes that killed more than 600 people, including 44 police officers.

Hasina, 76, fled to India on August 5 and an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was formed. (ANI)
