Andy Robertson: Liverpool defender determined to silence ‘skeptics’ – ‘Everyone had written me off’

Andy Robertson has revealed his determination to prove ‘doubters’ wrong after being ‘written off’ for the first time in his Liverpool career.

The left-back has been a Liverpool mainstay since winning the starting job from Alberto Moreno shortly after joining Hull in 2017.

But he has had a difficult start to the season under new head coach Arne Slot.

He missed most of pre-season through injury and was later dropped for the wins against Brighton and Bayer Leverkusen after a “poor” first half against Arsenal.

“In the last two games I’ve been on the bench and I’ve had doubters for the first time in a long time, the first time at this club,” the Scotland captain told reporters.

“But it suits me for this position. I’m trying to prove people wrong again.

“I missed pre-season, which is never ideal for any player. And then I had ankle problems. I took another knock against Wolves and it took a little while to settle in.

“So, listen, I feel good. Obviously, taking a few games off was frustrating. I want to play every game, of course, but it wasn’t possible.

“I knew the next time I had the opportunity I would take it and that’s what I tried to do.”

He produced an impressive performance as Liverpool won to move five points clear at the top of the Premier League.

“I’m a lot older and a lot wiser now than when I arrived,” he added.

“When I arrived, I was only 23 years old and I was playing for the first time for a big club. I’ve been here for seven years and I’ve won everything, I’ve played in a lot of big matches. I’m much more experienced and much better at change away from everything, like overreactions and things like that.

‘I feel ready for the new challenge’ – Amorim eager to start at Man Utd

“Probably a bad 45 minutes of football against Arsenal, it wasn’t great. I think almost everyone wrote me off after that. That’s football and that’s what’s happening these days. People can write me off all they want. But I will always try to keep working, keep improving, I tried to do that and I hope I showed it (against Villa).

Robertson was a key figure in Liverpool’s golden era over the past decade.

He says he spoke to new head coach Slot about his form this season.

“The manager is very open and honest,” he said.

“We have spoken several times and it has always been good conversations. There is mutual respect between the two of us even if we don’t agree on the composition of the teams.

“It happened with Jurgen (Klopp), it happened with Scotland, and I still have respect for the manager. He knows my experience in the dressing room and how I try to help everyone. And it won’t stop. But I love playing.

Arteta ‘prays’ Arsenal recover from ‘absolute nightmare’ injury situation

“I like to start and be on the pitch, but when I’m not, I try to be as professional as possible and I just try to talk on the training pitch and wait for my chance. I knew that the next time I had a chance, I would take it and that’s what I tried to do.

Many expected Liverpool to be tested as the Klopp era ended and Slot to take charge at Anfield.

However, Slot is off to a good start with 15 wins in 17 matches, and Robertson says there is a simple explanation for how the transition has gone so far.

He explained: “Because we won games. It’s as simple as that: winning matches breeds confidence. You win one and move on to the next one. At the beginning we had full weeks between matches to do a lot of tactical work. We didn’t have much time in pre-season.

“The guys are playing really well at the moment, some have been incredible. It’s about continuing and winning games to build confidence throughout the club.”
