Paddington Peru post-credits scenes explained: how many are there and does this potentially set up Paddington 4?

It’s time to be cautious, excited as the highly anticipated trio Paddington 3 is now out in UK cinemas, ready to satisfy fans after such a long wait of seven years after the last installment.

And you may already be wondering if Paddington in Peru do you have a post-credits scene? Do you have to stay in your seat during and after the credits? Well, lucky for you, we have all the answers…

Of course, Paddington 2 featured an iconic mid-credits scene in which Hugh Grant’s iconic villain Phoenix Buchanan performed a fabulous musical number. The question then is: can we expect something similar with Paddington in Peru?

Does Paddington in Peru have a post-credits scene?

There are not one but two post-credits scenes from Paddington 3, so be sure to stick around both during the credits and after you’ve finished rolling for the delicious surprises.

We’ve broken down both scenes below…

Paddington Peru Credits Scene Explained

As the credits for Paddington in Peru begin to roll, you may notice a curious addition to the cast list. At the very bottom, the credits “Hugh Grant as Phoenix Buchanan” appear, which may understandably leave you perplexed given that the iconic Paddington 2 The villain was nowhere to be seen during the film itself.

However, everything becomes clear once the main credits roll, as we cut to a middle credits setting the prison that the dastardly Buchanan was sent to at the end of Paddington 2. The Prison, as you may remember , was the same establishment as Paddington. Bear himself served time when he was accused of stealing from Samuel Gruber’s antique store.

During the scene, Paddington visits Grant’s villain at the prison, bringing with him the bears he encountered during his adventure in Peru, who turned out to be the last members of his family. Obviously, Paddington and Buchanan stayed in touch after the events of the sequel.

Buchanan tells Paddington that he will be released soon, either near the end of his ten-year prison sentence or due to good behavior. As we learned in Paddington 2’s post-credits scene, Phoenix put his theatrical talents to good use in the prison, involving other inmates in his elaborate musical numbers.

He clearly wants to continue down this path once he gets out, telling Paddington that he thinks the visiting bears might be the performers he needs for a production of the classic fairy tale Goldilocks. In fact, Buchanan even begins casting bears in the roles of Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and more.

Not only is it great to see Grant’s legendary villain back on screen, but the entertaining scene is also a clever reversal of the one we see in Paddington 2, when the Brown family visits the Bear in prison. As you may remember, Paddington is joined there by his new inmate friends, much to the Browns’ surprise.

We can only hope that Buchanan can appear in a sequel, with Paddington 4 is reportedly in the works. Everyone involved is keeping their cards close to their chest, but perhaps this scene sets things up. Let’s be real, Grant’s character is a fan favorite and here they are keen to emphasize that he needs to get out of prison.

So, does this mean Phoenix Buchanan will make a big return in Paddington 4? We can certainly hope so.

Adding more weight to the theory that we’re setting up Buchanan’s return, the character appears again right at the very end of Paddington 3’s post-credits scene, which comes after the credits have stopped.

This scene is short but sweet, simply highlighting Buchanan’s conversation with the bears, exclaiming “what fun” at his idea of doing a Goldilocks show. He also comments on “how much fur”, clearly surprised by the amount of bears on the other side of the glass.

It really doesn’t add much and it’s likely that Grant is improvising in the role, with the filmmakers including him as an added treat for fans who stuck around through the credits. And hey, we’ll never say no to Phoenix Buchanan again.
