Itumeleng Khune’s career under threat after latest decision

Itumeleng Khune’s football career is under threat after he committed an illegal act against players who wish to remain active.

After a distinguished career with Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana, Khune remains passionate about continuing his footballing journey. Khune representatives are actively exploring opportunities with PSL clubs to offer its services. However, his recent partnership with Top Bet has raised serious complications that could prevent him from playing professionally.

Sources close to the matter revealed that FIFA and PSL regulations prohibit anyone linked to a betting company from participating in official football matches, either directly or indirectly. This rule is in place to protect the integrity of the game and prevent any potential influence on match results.

Partnership with betting company could end Khune’s career

An insider shared that Khune’s involvement with a betting company could prevent him from returning to professional football. “They are still assessing the situation, but according to FIFA and PSL regulations it seems very unlikely that he will continue in professional football due to these betting and gaming rules. Whether he owns shares or is simply a partner in a betting company, it is considered inappropriate for him to actively play as it compromises the integrity of the games, which is against the rules of FIFA games and betting,” explained the source.

Both FIFA and the PSL have strict regulations regarding betting, with the aim of maintaining transparency and fairness in football. Under these rules, any involvement in a betting company, regardless of capacity, could be considered a conflict of interest, potentially influencing the results of the games. The source continued: “Third party involvement in the game is strictly prohibited and he cannot be seen flouting these rules. From this point of view, retirement might be his best option.

A complicated path ahead

According to Article 26 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, Khune’s involvement in a betting company puts him in contradiction with international and national football regulations. The rule prohibits persons bound by the FIFA Code, including players, referees and officials, from having a direct or indirect interest in betting, gambling or football-related activities. “Interests include obtaining any possible advantage for persons bound by the Code themselves and/or related parties,” the FIFA regulations state.

PSL’s ambiguity on betting regulations

Even though FIFA has clear regulations on betting, the PSL is yet to implement explicit rules on betting and its impact on players and officials. This regulatory gray area leaves Khune in a complicated position. As he seeks to balance his professional ambitions with the legalities surrounding his betting partnership.

The PSL’s hesitance to address this issue means that, for now, Khune’s future remains uncertain. If the PSL implemented clearer betting rules, it could provide more clarity on the issue. But for now, Khune’s career hangs in the balance. And it may be up to the league to set a precedent for involving players and officials with betting companies.
