Real Madrid-Barcelona: Kylian Mbappé sets an unwanted offside record

Kylian Mbappé was caught offside a career-high eight times on Saturday Classic – equaling the highest total for a player in a La Liga match in the last 15 years – as Barcelona beat Real Madrid in a 4-0 victory.

Robert Lewandowski scored twice, taking his season tally to a league-leading 14 goals, before Lamine Yamal and Raphinha scored late on to put Barca six points clear of Madrid at the top of the table.

Mbappé finished the match at the Bernabéu having fired three shots, all on target, but was often frustrated by Barca’s high defensive line, with two goals disallowed for offside.

The star striker has scored eight times in all competitions since arriving at Madrid in the summer, but failed to convert in his biggest test yet.

Mbappé’s eight offsides constitute the most offsides by a player in a La Liga match since 2009, equaling the unwanted record held by Elche’s Jonathan against Athletic Club in May 2015.

Speaking after the match, Barca’s players praised the coaching of their coach Hansi Flick, who made their offside trap the most effective in Europe’s five major leagues.

“We have done it all season, the defensive work is spectacular,” said midfielder Marc Casadó. “It’s the work of the whole team. It’s incredible to be so brave, to play such a high defensive line, but at the moment it’s working for us.”

“Flick is amazing,” Yamal said. “He arrived, there was a radical change in the dressing room. It shows in the way we play. We have a lot of respect for him, he doesn’t need to shout or anything, it’s an incredible coach.”
