Finland records new wind power production record | Yle News

Due to the excess electricity produced by wind power on Sunday, other energy sources were able to reduce their production.

Finnish wind turbines set a record production record on Sunday evening, according to national grid manager Fingrid.

At around 7 p.m., the turbines were producing electricity with an average power of 6,448 megawatts (MW), which is equivalent to the power of four Olkiluoto 3 nuclear reactors.

At that time, 12,265 MW of electricity was produced per hour, meaning that half of all electricity produced in Finland came from wind power.

“In the evening, almost as much electricity was exported from Finland to Estonia and Sweden as transmission connections allowed,” said Arto Pahkinresponsible for the Main Grid Control Center in Fingrid.

Due to surplus electricity, hydroelectric power production was minimized and Olkiluoto 3 also decreased its production.

Among Finnish nuclear power plants, Olkiluoto 3 participates in the electricity regulation market, allowing its production to be temporarily adjusted according to needs.

Thanks to strong and favorable wind gusts, the price of electricity on the stock exchange fell to a low level over the weekend.

Despite record production, Finland’s wind turbines were still operating below their maximum capacity of 7,898 megawatts.
