New technologies have made smarter urban management a reality in Shanghai, including tracing mixed waste disposal errors, spotting illegal structures and uncovering the use of waste oil, officials said during of the 8th Urban Management Forum.

Addressing the theme “Urban Management and Intelligence”, government officials and business representatives discussed new avenues of urban governance with a digital approach at the forum organized by the Urban Management Research and Application Association on Friday of Shanghai Law in Jing’an District.

In the first half of this year, the city discovered about 900 alert events through the system, according to Zou.

Laser methane detectors, digital drone airports, ecological patrol vehicles, intelligent data collection vehicles… were terms from science fiction blockbusters, which actually appear in real life.

Shanghai Zongbao Security Service Co, a company specializing in urban management support, uses advanced technologies to detect gas leaks in time and eliminate security risks.

“In the past, checking each household and looking for signs of leaks was the primary approach. However, this required not only a huge workload, but also low detection efficiency,” said Yang Pu, vice general manager of the company.

A laser methane detector was developed, mounted on a patrol vehicle and capable of penetrating obstacles such as glass. With its long-distance operation, it can detect gas leaks without entering a room, enabling real-time, accurate and dynamic detection of gas leaks.

As of the end of September, 57 first-level intelligent detections of gas leaks involving businesses along the streets of Pudong New Area have been spotted through the detector, and 21 cases involving illegal gas-related activities by businesses are being investigated. ‘investigation.

The smart urban management model created by the “digital airport by drone” is another example. With intelligent image recognition technology, automatic discovery and recognition of illegal activities has become easier and less costly.

“From takeoff to discovery and confirmation of illegal activities, it only takes 15 minutes,” Yang said. “Compared with traditional methods, it has the advantages of early discovery and intervention, greatly improving law enforcement efficiency.”
