Ohio recreational marijuana sales top $131 million • Ohio Capital Journal

Recreational marijuana sales in Ohio have surpassed $131 million in less than three months.

Total recreational marijuana sales in the state were $131,813,130 as of Oct. 26, according to the Ohio Department of Commerce Cannabis Control Division. Ohio imposes a 10% point-of-sale tax on each non-medical marijuana transaction.

Ohioans voted for legalize marijuana last November up to number 2 and recreational sales started on August 6. Under Ohio law, customers 21 and older can purchase up to 2.5 ounces of recreational marijuana at dispensaries.

An Ohio Ohio State University Drug Enforcement and Policy Center study Beginning in August 2023, potential annual tax revenues from legalizing marijuana under Question 2 are estimated to be between $276 million and $403 million in the fifth year of an operational market of the cannabis.

Issue 2 created five funds in the public treasury: the Adult Use Tax Fund, the Social Equity and Cannabis Employment Fund, the Host Community Cannabis Fund, the Substance Abuse and Substance Abuse and Cannabis Control Division and Tax Commissioner Fund.

According to the DCC, 16,254 pounds of recreational plant materials were sold and 2,094,864 units of manufactured goods. The average sales price of manufactured goods was $29.21 the week of October 20-26, according to CDC.

There are 124 dual-use marijuana dispensaries in Ohio, meaning they are licensed to sell marijuana for both recreational and medical purposes.

More than 100 cities or townships in Ohio having passed moratoriums banning recreational marijuana sales starting Oct. 22, according to the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Some moratoriums are set to expire later this year or next year, but several of them are indefinite.

Legalize marijuana also allowed home cultivation for Ohioans 21 and older with a limit of six plants per person and 12 plants per residence.
