Japan, Poland to deepen cooperation in nuclear, renewable energy sectors

NHK has learned Japan will agree to deepen cooperation with Poland in the energy sector to help the European Union member state reduce carbon emissions.

Japanese government officials, including a parliamentary vice-minister of the economy and industry ministry, are scheduled to visit Poland next week to discuss the issue.

Sources say the two governments are likely to agree to advance bilateral cooperation in the fields of nuclear and renewable energies in order to assist Poland’s efforts toward decarbonization.

Japan is looking to offer to Poland its technology for using ammonia as part of fuel in coal-fired power generation. Ammonia emits no carbon dioxide when burned.

Japan is also considering a plan to have Japanese companies extend technological assistance for the construction of nuclear power plants in Poland.

Coal power accounts for 70 percent of Poland’s energy output. Warsaw is hoping to accelerate its efforts to decarbonize by introducing Japan’s advanced technology.

For its part, Tokyo is aiming to expand business and investment opportunities in Poland, which is posting relatively high economic growth among EU members.
