NYC Congestion Pricing: Firefighters Union Set to Speak Out in Lawsuit Against Manhattan Congestion Pricing Plan

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — Despite its lower cost, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul’s attempt to revive the controversial congestion pricing plan still faces resistance.

The new price of $9 is lower than the original price of $15, but many people in the tri-state area are not in favor of the plan and are fighting to stop it from happening.

“A $9 toll achieves our goals without putting additional pressure on those who can least afford it,” Hochul said.

In total, nine prosecutions are underway.

The firefighters’ union is expected to speak out against congestion pricing on Friday.

Most Manhattan drivers south of 60th Street will be charged $9.

The MTA said that would not only ease some traffic on the roads, but the $15 billion in revenue would be needed to improve subway service, make it safer and make other improvements.

Some drivers say it should be up to the MTA to come up with the money.

Among the lawsuits is one filed by the state of New Jersey and the teachers union.

“I hope New Yorkers embrace the congestion charge once it’s in place and the president backs down,” said Kathryn Wylde of the Partnership for New York City.

“I’m ready to fight the congestion charge once again, to protect Jersey families from more taxes and more cancer-causing pollution,” said Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-New Jersey.

Anthony Johnson has more about New Jersey commuters’ reaction to congestion pricing.

New congestion pricing charges under the revised pricing plan under discussion include:

  • An off-peak rate of $2.25 for private cars, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays and from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. on weekends, down from the $3.75 in the initial plan.
  • A $3 “passage credit” for passenger cars entering the congestion zone via four Manhattan tunnels, which is down from the original price of $5.
  • Small trucks and charter buses cost $14.40, originally $24, and large trucks and tour buses cost $21.60, originally $36.
  • An additional per-ride surcharge is now 75 cents for taxis and black car services, originally $1.25, and $1.50 for Uber and Lyfts, originally $2.50 .

President-elect Donald Trump has openly and vehemently opposed congestion pricing, saying last May that he would end the governor’s plan during his first week in office. But it would become much more complicated for Trump if the governor implements his plan before his inauguration in January.

Instead, the $9 toll could increase in coming years under the plan, which is what the Riders Alliance — which is fighting for the toll to raise billions for public transit — hopes to do.

However, state Operations Director Kathryn Garcia said they won’t raise the congestion toll for at least three years.

State Budget Director Blake Washington acknowledged that the state will regularly review toll amounts to ensure sufficient revenue is generated. The toll will only rise “if absolutely necessary,” he said.

The president-elect released the following statement:

“I have great respect for New York Governor Kathy Hochul and look forward to working with her to make New York and America great again. But I strongly disagree with the decision regarding congestion charge It has never worked, but more importantly the same is true for a city, town or village trying to recover from a very difficult time, which can certainly be the case for the city of. New York This will put New York City at a disadvantage to competing cities and states, and businesses will flee. Not only is this a massive tax on people coming in, it is extremely inconvenient, both from the point of view of. It will be virtually impossible for New York City to return as long as the congestion tax is in effect. relating to employment It is the most regressive tax known to women (men!).

The MTA board is expected to approve the new fare at a meeting scheduled for Nov. 18.
