How to keep your iPhone 16 battery healthy: 9 key tips for longevity

Apple iPhones have offered the Battery Health feature for some time, providing a clear indication of the health of your smartphone’s battery and when it might need to be replaced. Ideally, Apple recommends replacing your battery once it drops below 80%. However, this incurs an additional cost after purchasing the device. So how do you extend the life of a model like the iPhone16 and preserve the health of your battery for longer? Here are some tips and tricks to help you maintain your iPhone battery and enjoy good battery life as your smartphone ages:

1. Enable optimized battery charging

Step 1: Go to Settings, then Battery, and select Charging.

Step 2: Now enable Optimized Battery Charging.

This feature limits charging to 80% until you actually need it. Over time, this helps preserve the life of your battery.

You can also limit your charge to around 85-90% depending on the model. This reduces stress on the battery as a 100% charge puts more strain on it.

2. Turn off Always-On Display

Available only on Pro models, the always-on display consumes a lot of power. To improve battery life and reduce charging cycles, consider turning it off.

Step 1: Go to Settings, Display & Brightness and turn off Always On Display.

Step 2: If you don’t want to turn it off completely, you can turn off the wallpaper feature, which reduces power consumption, the same way Android phones handle it.

3. Use Low Power Mode

When you’re not actively using your iPhone, turn on Low Power Mode. This reduces idle battery drain and is ideal when you want to extend battery life, such as when traveling or working in the office. To turn it on, go to Settings, then Battery and enable low power mode.

4. Use Dark Mode

Enabling dark mode on your iPhone saves power, especially with OLED displays, because it turns off individual pixels in dark areas of the screen. This reduces power consumption, especially in applications that support this mode.

5. Connect to Wi-Fi instead of mobile data

If possible, connect to a Wi-Fi network instead of using mobile data. Using 5G or high-speed mobile data uses more power than using Wi-Fi, so this simple change can help save your battery.

6. Charge before the battery reaches single digits

Plugging in your device before it drops to single-digit battery levels can help avoid stressing the battery. It’s best to charge your iPhone when the battery reaches around 20%, ideally up to 80-85%.

7. Use a slow charger

When you’re not in a hurry, use a slower charger. This prevents your iPhone from heating up, which could shorten your battery life. Slower charging is kinder to your device and helps preserve battery health over time.

8. Use certified chargers

Always use chargers certified as compatible with your iPhone. Many people make the mistake of using random chargers, but this can damage your battery in the long run. To ensure the best battery health, use official Apple chargers or certified third-party options, as well as certified cables.

9. Avoid Using Your Phone While Charging

Using your iPhone while it’s charging, especially for performance-intensive tasks like gaming, increases the temperature of the device. This can cause the phone to slow down in performance, drain the battery faster, and contribute to higher charging cycles, ultimately damaging the battery in the long run.

By following these tips, you can significantly improve the health of your iPhone battery and ensure it lasts longer, saving you money on replacements.
