WARNING: Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain expected for KZN and Gauteng

Gauteng could be inundated with more than 50mm of rain while a level 4 storm warning has been issued for KwaZulu-Natal.

From scorching heat to torrential rain: Gauteng has seen a mix of extreme weather conditions recently, with heavy rain expected from Sunday to Monday evening.

The latest forecast of up to 50mm of rain for Gauteng comes as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Level 4 warning for heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail and flooding in KwaZulu-Natal starting Sunday midnight.

These heavy downpours, hail, damaging winds and localized flooding are expected as thunderstorms intensify across the country, driven by a moisture-laden trough and atmospheric system.

Prepare for heavy rain in Gauteng

“In Gauteng, we are mainly expecting heavy rain on Sunday and Monday,” said Weather in Vox forecaster Michelle du Plessis.

It warned that some storms could be severe, possibly bringing hail, damaging winds and heavy rain, with possible localized flooding.

“This stormy weather is due to a trough extending across the western interior, carrying moisture from the tropics towards South Africa, as well as a trough aloft which favors the development of rain and thunderstorms . »

Du Plessis said more than 50mm of rain was possible in parts of Gauteng by Monday evening.

KZN Storm Warning Level 4

SAWS Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela says severe thunderstorms are expected in the east and center of the country, which will be accompanied by heavy downpours and even hail.

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said the affected areas include Abaqulusi, Ladysmith, Hluhluwe, Dannhauser, Underberg, eDumbe, eMadlangeni, Endumeni, eThekwini and Greater Kokstad.

Other affected areas include Impendle, Ingwe, Estcourt, Sobabili, Jozini, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Mkhambathini, Giants Castle, Mooi River, Msinga, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba, Ndwedwe and Newcastle.

Mzila said the weather conditions could bring heavy downpours, large amounts of small hailstones, excessive lightning and destructive winds, leading to flooding and damage to infrastructure.

“The province has already experienced significant rainfall, with the risk of additional rain potentially leading to flooding, particularly in low-lying areas,” he said.
