SSA digitizes or removes signature requirements for many forms

The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced progress this year to reduce customer burden by switching wet (physical) signature requirements to digital signatures for more than 30 forms, as well as removing signature requirements altogether. for 13 forms. These actions simplify application processes for individuals, including removing a potential reason for applications to be returned or denied.

“In the forms Americans use most often, we eliminate as many hassles as possible, helping people sign with just one click or reducing the need to drive or mail something as much as possible” , said Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley. “That means faster, error-free processing and better service for our customers, who deserve a government that meets their needs efficiently and effectively.”

As a result of this work, SSA will now allow an electronic signature rather than a wet signature for more than 30 forms, which represent 90 percent of the forms most commonly used by SSA customers in local field offices. Collectively, these forms represent approximately 14 million signed forms submitted each year.

Additionally, also this year, the SSA removed the signature requirement entirely for 13 of its most commonly used forms, totaling approximately 1 million volume submissions per year. This includes removing the signature requirement for a medical source’s opinion of the patient’s ability to manage benefits (Form SSA-787, which has a total annual volume of 768,000), the letter to the employer requesting wage information (form SSA-L4201, which has a total annual volume of 768,000). volume of 133,000), and Request for Reconsideration/Right to Disability Termination to Appear (Form SSA-789, which has an annual volume of 49,000). Clients can also download many of the 13 forms online, further reducing the burden felt by clients.

To take advantage of this progress, the SSA is considering removing signature requirements on other forms, which would ease requirements for approximately one million additional transactions.
