Democrats still filibuster. Thanks to Sinema for saving him

With Republicans soon taking control of the White House, the Senate and perhaps even the House of Representatives, the filibuster will be one of Democrats’ few remaining obstacles to slowing Trump’s plans.

So I imagine Democrats’ thank you notes are being mailed to outgoing U.S. senators. Kyrsten CinemaI-Arizona, and Joe ManchinDW.Va., for their refusal to end the filibuster.

U.S. Representative Ruben Gallego The Senate’s 60-vote rule was formerly called “an obstruction tool”, back when Democrats ran the joint. Gallego, in tight race to replace Sinema in the Senate, was one of several Democrats who called out the senator for her refusal to join them in ending the filibuster so that a wish list of Democratic proposals could pass with a simple majority.

“My position is that the filibuster needs to be reformed. It’s not a tool of compromise, it’s a tool of obstruction,” Gallego said last year in announcing his Senate campaign.

I still feel the same, I wonder, now that Republicans are poised to control the Senate?

Now that Donald Trump will be back in the White House, with a Senate eager to advance his tax and immigration agenda? On education, health care and social policy? (Judicial and executive branch confirmations require only 51 votesbecause this part of the filibuster rule was gutted about ten years ago.)

Democrats said Sinema was wrong to protect the filibuster

Democrats were dismayed when Sinema and Manchin stood firm in the face of filibuster after Joe Biden became president, refusing to abandon the procedural rule to pass a voting rights bill in 2022.

Ditto in September, when Vice President Kamala Harris called for abandoning the filibuster to pass abortion rights legislation.

“To state the supreme evidence, eliminate filibuster to codify Roe v Wade it also allows a future Congress to ban all abortion nationwide,” Sinema said in September. “What Absolutely terrible and short-sighted idea.»

The Democrats immediately drew their knives.

Today, they should extend their hand to thank Sinema for standing her ground.

The filibuster will protect Democrats in the GOP-led Senate

With Republicans soon taking control of the White House, the Senate and perhaps even the House of Representatives, the filibuster will be one of the Democrats’ few remaining speed bumps to slow down some of Trump’s most controversial plans for America.

Can you imagine if the Democrats had already gutted it?

In 2018, when Republicans controlled both the House And Senatea frustrated President Trump called for an end to the filibuster as Democrats blocked his border initiatives and other big projects.

Then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell resisted Trump’s call.

On Wednesday, McConnell again held his ground on maintain the filibuster in place even though the Republicans could circumvent the qualified majority rule with a simple majority vote.

“The filibuster will continue,” McConnell told reporters.

Although McConnell is resigning as party leader, his comments indicate that Senate Republicans will likely leave the filibuster in place.

And the Democrats? I guess all of a sudden this antiquated “tool of obstruction” now looks an awful lot like a protector of minority rights.
