A North Carolina animal shelter has made a desperate appeal to find the family of a clearly much-loved dog who was stranded during the recent hurricane.

Charlotte-based Forgotten, Now Family Rescue took in a Great Pyrenees mix that was found on a riverbank after devastating floods caused by Hurricane Helene.

The dog, which they named River, was found in a completely inaccessible area, but with the help of an all-terrain vehicle, a wildlife officer, a veterinarian and a member from the animal control team, they were able to bring him to safety.

The shelter is now determined to reunite River and her family. Because of his friendly and loving temperamentthey are certain there is a family out there, looking for their beloved pet.

Emergency services launched a new appeal on October 18, confirming that his family has not yet been found, but that they remain convinced that “there is an extraordinary family looking for him”.

Referring to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helen in the area, the shelter said: “They’ve already potentially lost everything. The last thing (we) want to do is have them lose their dog too.”

“I’m thinking of everyone who suffered there,” another wrote, while a third said: “I hope he gets reunited with his family. I can’t imagine how scared he is and “So many lost animals break my heart. I just pray he still has a family to come home to.”

Hurricane Helene devastated parts of North Carolina, killing 95 people in the state, according to authorities.

More than a dozen victims remain anonymous, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Servicess. Yancey County, where River was found, has recorded 11 deaths linked to Helene.
