Absence of a caterer at the wedding of a terminal cancer patient: “entirely ghost”

A terminal cancer patient’s wedding didn’t go as planned after the planner said the caterer failed to show up for the celebration.

“Completely ghosted”, the wedding planner wrote in a post on Reddit on November 12. “Several phone calls and no answer.” In addition to food for the Wish Upon a Wedding event (a nonprofit organization that grants weddings and vow renewals to couples facing terminal illnesses or life-altering health issues), the caterer was also responsible for “all the water, Bev and mocktails.”

Luckily, a local restaurant intervened with only two hours notice. They produced food and drinks for 50 people and even gave the couple a $200 gift card.

“I certainly hope that this will be a first and a last in my career as an urban planner,” wrote the urban planner. “I feel so bad, I did everything I could. But it was supposed to be such a beautiful day, a true gift to a couple facing unimaginable difficulties.”

The planner explained that she had taken on a last minute job just 10 days before the wedding and that the caterer had already been booked by the previous planner. “I had assumed she had done her due diligence in checking the caterer’s background. But also? I thought it would be nice to have a little more trust in the vendors.”

“I asked the other sellers if they had ever seen anything like this,” the post continued. “Together they had over 100 years of wedding experience. Not a single one of them had a caterer fail to show up.”

Those in the comments section expressed their views on this unfortunate situation.

“There’s nothing worse than ruining a terminal cancer patient’s wedding,” one commenter wrote. “You have to have courage to think about doing something like that. I’m glad you were able to find someone to step in, and this restaurant deserves all the extra business it gets!

Another praised the organizer for ensuring the couple could enjoy their special day.

“It’s terrible but I hope that at the end of the day, the couple will remember all the good that came out of it. You, ready to work so diligently at the last minute, the restaurant that could have legitimately said no… Bad memories are strong, but may the good be stronger once.”
