Cape Town has won the coveted title of World’s Best Food City in the 2024 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.

The ranking comes after 575,048 votes were cast by readers in the 37th annual survey, putting Cape Town ahead of some of the world’s best-known culinary destinations.

With a score of 95.65, Cape Town edged out Milan, Italy, who came second with 95.20, and Valencia, Spain, in third place with a score of 95.00, to secure first place.

Tokyo took fourth place while Porto, Portugal finished fifth.

Cape Town’s vibrant culinary scene, which blends rich South African flavors and international influences, seems to have struck a chord with foodies around the world.

This recognition underlines the transformation of the city into a global gastronomic hub.

Cape Town’s distinction is complemented by another prestigious achievement as three South African hotels feature in the ranking of the world’s 100 best hotels. These are Tintswalo Boulders Boutique Villa, Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel and Cheetah Plains.

The honor is part of broader recognition of the city’s thriving tourism and hospitality industries. Condé Nast Traveler tapped 750 writers and hospitality professionals from around the world to narrow down a list of 700,000 hotels to just 100, highlighting the elite 0.014% of global lodging.

In addition to its culinary and hospitality successes, Cape Town has further cemented its status as a world-class destination. The Port of Cape Town has been named Africa’s first cruise port. Cape Grace has been recognized as Africa’s Best Luxury Hotel and One&Only Cape Town has been awarded the prestigious title of Africa’s Leading Luxury Resort.

Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, was proud of the city’s success. “Winning the Africa’s Best Urban Destination 2024 award for the fourth consecutive year is a reflection of the exceptional efforts made to promote the city as a premier travel destination,” he said.
