Why do NFL fans sing “Country Roads” in Germany? John Denver’s hit song

play

Apparently all country roads lead to Germany.

John Denver’s popular song “Country Roads (Take Me Home)” has gone international, with NFL fans in Germany appropriating the song for the annual Munich game. From the countryside of West Virginia to the streets of Europe, it’s a fascinating song choice that bridges two polar opposite worlds that also have a language barrier.

Connected by song and pigskin, music and football have found a way to unite the world in ways many can only dream of. Here’s a look at how the 1971 hit became the NFL’s German anthem.

Why do we sing “Country Roads” in Germany?

American influence can be found everywhere, so it’s no surprise to see a hit song tied to West Virginia make its way across the Atlantic to Europe.

Before the Munich match, there was Oktoberfest. Germany’s biggest beer festival, known for its beer drinking, is one of the places where “country roads” began to take hold. Like most drunk, bratwurst-loving, schnitzel-eating people, it’s hard not to get carried away by the melody. The bottom line is that the American hit is simply a fun song to sing. Bill Danoff, who wrote the song, was asked about its popularity in Germany in a 2013 interview with The Washington Post.

“I have no idea,” Danoff said. He added that he had never been to Germany, an interesting note considering he also never went to West Virginia before writing the song. Although he ultimately came to the same conclusion that most people do when confronted with the thought.

“First of all, it’s very singable,” Danoff said. “But “Maybe Call Me” too. Maybe “Call Me Maybe” will be the song 40 years from now.

Clearly, Carly Rae Jepsen hasn’t knocked down Danoff and Denver’s hit yet, which doesn’t look like she’ll be doing so anytime soon.

As the story goes, this song would be brought into the stadium for the first NFL game in Munich. From Munich to Frankfurt, this seems to be a tradition that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

When did fans start singing “Country Roads” at NFL games in Germany?

People began to notice the song’s popularity in Germany when the crowd sang along during the Seahawks vs. Buccaneers game in 2022. This one-off performance turned into an encore performance when the league returned in 2023. While the international series continues to grow, and with Germany a permanent stop on the list, it’s safe to say that Denver’s legacy extends far beyond United States soil.

It is now up to other cities to find their own rhythm.
