The Maryville Police Department announced a landmark arrest in a murder that occurred nearly 40 years ago.

Billy Wayne Hearon died on January 4, 1985, and since then, police have been working to arrest a suspect. On the morning of November 6, they announced that Roger Oody, 62, already serving a life sentence for another murder committed in 1987, had been charged in Hearon’s death.

Police say Oody, who was 22 at the time, stabbed Hearon approximately 70 times. The 28-year-old man was found dead at the Shady Acres trailer park in Maryville. He was the 11th child of 15 children in his family.

Oody was indicted by a Blount County grand jury on November 4 and booked into the Blount County Justice Center the following day. He will make his first court appearance on November 8.

Police say the discovery of new evidence in recent months, coupled with new technology and investigative techniques, led to the arrests. They did not give details.

“I would like to express our deepest gratitude to Loudon County Sheriff Jimmy Davis and the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office, whose invaluable assistance and cooperation were most helpful in solving this murder. After years search for answers, we are one step closer to justice,” Maryville police said. said Chief Tony Crisp during a press conference on November 6.

Prosecutor Ryan Desmond said a news report led to the discovery of new evidence,

“There is another party I want to thank and that is all of you, the local media, as you will learn when this matter comes to court. This was actually an article published on last year by our local press on this unsolved homicide case which led to the development of evidence that we otherwise would not have.”

Crisp said he was glad the case was resolved.

“The Hearon family, I just want them to know that we are very happy to bring some resolution and closure when it comes to their brother because I know it weighs heavy on their hearts and minds because They shared that with me.”
