Parky McParkface? Public invited to help choose name for new Shrewsbury Park

Shropshire Council has asked Salopians to submit suggestions for the name of the new Roushill Park, before construction begins in early 2025.

The public is encouraged to submit suggestions before the end of November for consideration.

Shropshire Council, alongside development partners RivingtonHark and Shrewsbury Big Town Plan Partnership, will then publish a shortlist of the best suggestions for a final public vote in January, with the winning name revealed in February.

The new park will form the first part of the £18.7 million redevelopment of the area between Smithfield Road, Roushill and the UK government-funded Darwin Shopping Centre.

Demolition of the former Riverside shopping center and medical office has now entered its final phase in order to make room for the ambitious project.

The park will include play equipment, sunken rain gardens, seating and a lawn and event space. The council said it would provide “a quiet, relaxing space just minutes from the hustle and bustle of Shrewsbury’s high street”.

Ian Nellins, deputy leader of Shropshire Council, said: “The new park will be a space for everyone to enjoy, and we thought it was only fitting that Salopians had the final say on its name.

“We want the public to get creative with their suggestions. Shrewsbury is a special place with lots of things to celebrate, so we can’t wait to hear what people come up with.”

There are, however, some rules to respect. Names cannot be named after another place in Shrewsbury, promote a business or use offensive words, numbers or special characters.

Park names should also be easy to pronounce and spell to avoid confusion in an emergency.

It also cannot be named after a living person or have royal connotations, as this requires the consent of the royal family.
