  • Quick Share could soon come to iOS and macOS

  • It enables fast file transfers between devices

  • Alternative third-party tools are already available

Quick Share on Android is the equivalent of AirDrop, allowing you to easily transfer files between Android devicesChromebooks and Windows – and there are signs that Google is considering adding support for iPhones, iPads and Macs.

As noted by the team of Android AuthorityA comment left by a Google engineer on code essential to Quick Share specifically mentions iOS and macOS – a comment that would make more sense if an app for those platforms were in the works.

It’s not the biggest clue, but there might be something to it. There is already an official Quick Share for Windows app, so it’s not a stretch to imagine Google rolling out additional apps for Apple devices along the same lines.

As of now, there’s no official word from Google on this, but we’ll let you know if that changes. Quick Share was originally called Nearby Share, and having launched outside of beta in 2020is now available on the majority of Android phones and tablets.

It’s good to share

Apple wouldn’t of course build something like this into its own software, so iPhone, iPad and Mac owners would have to download a separate app for it to work – which could be a stumbling block .

However, users who own an Android phone and also use an iPad or Mac, for example, would probably be happy to download and install another app if it meant smoother file sharing between all their devices.

As indicated above on 9to5Googlethere are already third-party tools available to do the same job. An official option from Google would likely provide a more convenient and seamless experience (like Google’s tools for switch to iOS).

You may remember that earlier this year, Google and Samsung combined the two of their sharing protocols to improve file transfers between Pixel phones and Galaxy phones – and iPhones could be next on the list.
