November 6, 2024 at 4:32 p.m. IST

The complaint against actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty stems from a speech he delivered at a BJP event at the EZCC in Salt Lake on October 27.

A case was registered on Wednesday against actor-turned-BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty by the Bidhannagar police for allegedly making a provocative speech at a festive event in North 24 Parganas district last month.

The complaint against Chakraborty stems from a speech he delivered at a BJP event in Salt Lake’s EZCC on October 27, which led to the filing of an FIR at the Bidhannagar South police station.

Chakraborty, who earlier this year received India’s highest cinema honor, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, had on October 27 declared that the ‘masnad’ (throne) of West Bengal would belong to the BJP after the 2026 assembly elections, pledging to do it. whatever it takes to achieve this goal.

Speaking at the Eastern Zone Cultural Center (EZCC) programme, Chakraborty said, “In 2026, the masnad will be ours and we will do everything to achieve this goal. »

In an apparent reference to TMC MP Humayun Kabir’s communal remarks targeting BJP workers during the Lok Sabha elections, Chakraborty warned that no one should try to intimidate saffron party voters into abstaining from voting in the upcoming Assembly elections.

He called on his party workers to resist such attempts.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also present at the programme, organized to launch the West Bengal leg of the BJP’s membership drive.

“We have started an investigation into the matter,” said a senior Bidhannagar police officer.

While Chakraborty was not available for comment, BJP state president and Union minister Sukanta Majumdar termed the FIR a case of “vendetta politics”.

“There is nothing provocative in his speech. These are nothing but attempts to intimidate him by using the police as a political tool,” he said, quoting PTI.
