Mats Hummels’ ex-wife Cathy Fischer has opened up about her battle with depression and the impact mental illness had on her marriage to the former Borussia Dortmund star just weeks after Hummels went public with his new girlfriend.

Fischer and Hummels married in 2015 after meeting when they were 19 and share a son born three years later, but the couple separated in 2022.

Their divorce was finalized in December of that year and Hummels has since gone public with his girlfriend of over 10 months, Nicola Cavanis.

Fischer was keen to share his experience of mental health issues with BILD Women’s Health Summitas well as details about the impact of depression on his marriage.

The TV presenter and influencer pointed out that while she understood that people in the public eye were often ” envied ” and that she had always been attractive and ” super outgoing “, when she was alone it was another history.

“Who knows what it looks like inside me?” Fischer said during his speech at the Berlin summit. “A mental illness has no face, it hides behind the most beautiful curtain.”

Fischer shared that at times during her struggle with depression, she felt totally disconnected from Hummels, who played for Dortmund and Bayern Munich during their marriage.

The 36-year-old added: “I had conversations with my ex-husband at the time, of course, and I would often say, ‘I’m sorry for acting so strange right now, but I’m just I don’t feel well. I can’t show you my love right now.

“It does something to you when you realize that you are powerless over these emotions.”

Fischer also confessed that in an attempt to hide her feelings of disconnection, she often appeared “contrived” as she sought to “hide” her true feelings.

But after addressing her mental health, Fischer said at the summit that she was no longer receiving treatment or taking medication after “learning to manage (her) nature.”

Hummels and his new girlfriend Cavanis – 11 years his junior – went public with their relationship at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris this year, posing for photos outside the Théâtre du Châtelet.

Cavanis, who is ten years younger than Hummels, has found success as a model for several brands.

Fischer revealed that her depression sometimes made it difficult for her to love her ex-husband.

The model has modeled for brands such as Nivea, Victoria’s Secret, Puma, MCM and Tchibo.

She rose to fame after becoming the face of a Nivea brand campaign in February 2021.

Cavanis previously revealed she started modeling at the age of 15, before joining an agency two years later after leaving school.

In addition to Nivea, Cavanis has represented brands such as Puma, Victoria’s Secret, MCM, New Yorker and Tchibo.

Cavanis is represented by Munich Models and Wilhelmina, while she has 1.9 million followers on Instagram and 500,000 on TikTok.
