Another ‘huge’ cliff drop near Sidmouth closes trail

A trail has been closed following the latest in a series of recent “huge” cliff falls.

Beer Coastguard Rescue Team (BCRT) said they were called to the landslide at Salcombe Hill, near Sidmouth, Devon, on Friday morning.

In a post on social mediait said a permanent fence had been installed in the “very dangerous” area and warned that “more cliff falls would occur soon.”

The landowner, according to the National Trust, urged people to “stay away from the area” and stick to the footpath diversion route which is a safe distance from the edge.

“We are monitoring the situation,” the statement added.

BCRT described it as “another huge cliff drop this time east of Sidmouth”.

This happens a few days later a significant rock fall on the Jurassic Coast left a house teetering near the edge of a cliff.

BCRT said a drone team had been carrying out checks along the coast for other cliff falls that were not visible from above.

Sidmouth Lifeboat carried out a shoreline search to ensure no one was stranded after the cliff fall.

Sam Scriven, senior world heritage manager at the Jurassic Coast Trust, said rockfalls and landslides appear to be “increasingly common”.

“It kind of fits in with what we’ve been told to expect from the climate change trend,” he said.

He said more storms and wet weather were a “key factor” in the rockfalls.

Mr Scriven said the size of the rockfall depends on the geology of the cliff, with the addition of different layers potentially “creating a boundary of weakness”.

“The top of the cliff can become very saturated and very heavy and kind of slide and take a lot of the cliff below with it,” he said.

“I think that’s what happened in the latter case.”

He warned that rockfalls were “unpredictable” and said people should avoid “lingering” under cliffs and stay away from cliff edges.
