Jellison Family Foundation provides $1 million for hurricane relief

The Brian and Sheila Jellison Family Foundation is offering two matching gifts totaling $1 million to address immediate and long-term community needs following the destruction of Hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton, the organization announced.

“These storms have posed unimaginable challenges to our community, and we feel a deep responsibility to support both immediate recovery efforts and long-term rebuilding,” said Christie Jellison Mucha. “By coming together, we can help those affected find stability and rebuild their lives. We hope these matching donations will inspire others to join us and make a meaningful difference to those in need.

The impact of gifts includes:

· A matching donation of $500,000 for Season of Sharing to provide immediate assistance to residents of Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte and DeSoto counties. The donation, when matched, has the potential to raise $1.2 million for Season of Sharing, which also benefits from a match from the Patterson Foundation which contributes $100,000 for every $500,000 raised.

· A matching donation of $500,000 for the Suncoast Disaster Recovery Fund support long-term recovery across the region once emergency relief efforts are completed.

The Suncoast Disaster Recovery Fund was activated in the days leading up to the historic passage of Hurricane Ian on the Gulf Coast in September 2022. With a focus on equitable and holistic long-term recovery, the fund provides prioritizing support for social services such as child care and youth programs. It also targets underserved and vulnerable populations – people living in poverty, people with disabilities, and people with mental illness. Investments through this fund typically begin months after a disaster, once immediate recovery efforts are completed and service gaps and unmet needs can be identified.

The Jellison Family Foundation played a central fundraising role in the early days of the Suncoast Disaster Recovery Fund, providing $500,000 with a matching challenge that was quickly met, helping raise $5 million in funds a few weeks after Ian landed.

25th Annual Season of Sharing

The 25thth This year, the annual Season of Sharing fundraising campaign launched in the wake of Hurricane Helene, more than a month earlier than usual, to help thousands of lives disrupted by the damage caused by this unprecedented storm surge in coastal communities. Hurricane Milton, whose consequences are more widespread, has worsened the needs of communities.

“These significant donations will go a long way in helping our community heal,” said Roxie Jerde, CEO of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. “We are grateful to the Brian and Sheila Jellison Family Foundation for their inspiring support. This generosity and confidence in our Community Foundation’s management of these funds provides a much-needed boost to our community, enabling a resilient recovery.

Season of Sharing covers expenses such as housing, utilities, child care and transportation for people facing unexpected expenses or loss of income. Although not explicitly a disaster fund, many people whose jobs have been suspended could find themselves without the resources to manage their monthly bills. Others faced with unexpected compensation for damages may also feel financially strained.
