Hartford police search for killer after mother and 4-month-old son shot

HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – Police are investigating a double homicide after a drive-by shooting in Hartford on Tuesday.

The search for the killer continued the next day, a day after a car carrying three gunshot victims arrived at Hartford Hospital.

The victims, Jessiah Mercado, 20, and Messiah Diaz, 4 months, were fatally shot in the broad daylight attack.

Another passenger was also shot and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

“We believe our victim’s vehicle was stopped alongside our suspect vehicle who opened fire on the vehicle, striking our victims,” said Lt. Aaron Boisvert, Hartford Police Department.

Four people were in the car when the shooter opened fire. The driver was not injured and took the victims to Hartford Hospital.

The shooting took place on New Britain Avenue, between Monroe and Zion Street.

So far, no suspects have been arrested.

It is unclear how many shooters were involved in the incident.

Police are actively working to identify a suspicious vehicle and gather more details about the incident.

“All available units and detectives in the city are currently attempting to accomplish this task,” Boisvert said.

New Britain Avenue was blocked off between Monroe and Zion streets for the investigation.

A woman who has lived in the area for 25 years said the double homicide marks a new act of violence in the community.

“Every day it’s a danger. A shooting, drugs,” said Hartford resident Delia Mendoza. “No, it’s not safe in this area.”

The victims have not yet been identified.
