Parcel companies plan tie-ups with co-owners to reduce redeliveries

Labor-strapped Japanese parcel delivery companies have a plan in mind to reduce pressure on drivers. They aim to reduce redeliveries by entrusting condominium guards with the care of residents’ packages.

Three delivery companies tested the system in a building in Tokyo’s Chuo district. The building has around 200 homes and up to 150 packages are delivered there every day.

According to the agreement, the condominium staff receives all packages and forwards them to residents.

One resident says it’s convenient because she can receive packages from several delivery companies at once.

The companies say the system is ideal for buildings where parcel lockers are full and those where security prevents access to individual apartments.

A Daiwa Lifenext official said they will focus on large apartments and residential towers first, but also want to adopt the system for small and medium-sized condos.

Condominium managers can charge delivery companies a fee for the service, which could in turn increase the salaries of janitors who handle the packages.
