Test: The new Ninja Woodfire grill

“I have to show you what I did,” I told a chef friend. “I tried Ninja’s new smoker grill and made picanha.” And the boss? Faithful to his profession, skeptical and cynical. After all, he cooked in Michelin-starred restaurants, and a smoke cut with an electric appliance asked him questions.

With a barrage of cynical remarks, he approached the grill, opened it and immediately fell silent. Using the knife (which he brought from home because he is a chef), he cut the picanha. His expression changed when he explained that there were smoke rings, and it was surprising how well something that wasn’t a regular smoker could caramelize the meat. And the aroma, he said, was perfect.

Then I made a mistake and asked him to taste it. Within half an hour the cut was gone. Nearly two kilos disappeared between two men, while the children managed to take a few slices at great risk (Joey does not share food). The experiment was considered a success.

After conquering the home kitchen, Ninja turned his resources to the outdoor kitchen. In the outdoor kitchen, characterized mainly by the use of an oven, a grill and a smoker, it wanted to provide the main advantages of its products: intelligent, fast and healthy cooking. Smart cooking with precise programs and a temperature gauge saves time, planning and hassle while reducing the margin for error. And of course, this also has a health benefit, as it minimizes oil consumption.

With this vision, the American company launched the Ninja Woodfire range of outdoor products, including a smoker grill and an outdoor oven, allowing cooking, grilling, smoking and baking outdoors. The first two products in the range are the Ninja Woodfire Pro XL Grill Smoker model OG853 that we tested and the Ninja Woodfire OO103 outdoor oven model.

The grill can be used in gardens, on balconies or for camping (using site electricity or a generator, which has become a common feature in almost every home since the war).

The Woodfire features a large non-stick cooking surface that can prepare ten burgers at once, a digital thermometer and four cooking programs: Grill (mimicking the familiar barbecue with high temperatures for a short time), Roast ( lower temperature for a longer period). , essentially functioning as an outdoor oven), and Air Frying, which saves up to 75% oil (suitable for everything from fries to antipasto and schnitzels). But its main feature is the additional smoking option.

Smoke and chips

You can use a dedicated smoking program or add smoking to one of the other programs with the smoke button. The manufacturer promises authentic “barbecue” flavor without using charcoal, gas, or flames, and it fully delivers on that promise, whether you’re doing a long smoke the traditional way or adding smoky flavors with a short session smoking. By the way, there is a bonus: in addition to hot smoking, fans of the genre can also cold smoke.

Smoking is done using wood chips. The device comes with two free wood chip blends (paddles) made by the company, each suitable for five uses: a strong smoking blend, primarily for meats, and a mild smoking blend, primarily for fish and vegetables. You can buy packages of wood chips suitable for 20 uses for 29 NIS.

How does it work? In an incredibly simple way. Simply add a tablespoon of wood chips to the fire pit. When I did long smoking sessions (e.g. for asado), I found that when smoking lasted several hours, it was good to check periodically to see if the chips had burned completely. When this happened I added another batch and turned them on by pressing the button.

Security

The device is safety tested for use in Israel and complies with its electrical standards. The electrical outlet is designed for outdoor use and even has a built-in RCD approved by the Standards Institute. You can even leave the grill plugged in at all times, even in the rain. After turning it off, instead of unplugging it, you can press a reset button installed on the outlet and it will disconnect. This is a startup innovation.

Cleaning

I love grilling, but I can’t stand the cleanup afterward. However, it is essential to recognize this point: remember that in the end, this is an outdoor cooking product that will never be as clean as it was when you received it.

The fry basket is dishwasher safe. The cooking surface can be cleaned with the dedicated brush provided in the kit. I found that much less food stuck to it than other grills, thanks to its non-stick coating. Just be sure not to use degreasers or other chemicals, and avoid steel wool or abrasive materials.

Under the cooking surface there is a grease collection tray, where a disposable aluminum pan awaits. This tray is one size for the device and you can purchase it from the importer for 15 NIS for a pack of ten. I failed to purchase additional trays and have used one over six times without any problems.

I usually clean all possible parts of the device after use. Of course, I only clean the heating elements once they have cooled down. From smoking to smoking, the device will accumulate a black cloud. There’s no real need to clean it; this adds to the aroma.

Does the grill keep its promise?

To give my opinion, I tested the smoker grill by preparing various dishes including picanha, asado, burgers, wings, fries and many other delicious dishes. There are already electric grills and ovens on the market. Ninja has added features that make cooking easy and quick. But the real innovation Ninja achieved here is the successful integration of smoking. This is a technological advancement that deserves respect. This product makes cooking easier, is compact and has an attractive price.
