Elections Get Attention, But Don’t Forget to Vote for Student of the Week

While everyone heads to the polls this week to determine local elections and the presidential race, you can also vote to recognize some incredible high school students.

Below are the nominations for the Providence Journal’s Student of the Week initiative and it’s time for you to choose the best of the best.

Voting is open until Thursday, November 7 at noon.

High schools across the state have been invited to submit applications and a new round of candidates and votes will be available each Monday and close the following Thursday.

Participating Rhode Island high school principals, teachers and guidance counselors nominated students who they believe have demonstrated outstanding academic and academic achievement and community service.

We will announce a winner Friday on providencejournal.com and in print in the Sunday Providence Journal.

Seoanne Almada, Davies Vocational and Technical High School

Seoanne Almada, Davies Class of 2025, is an exceptional student who has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication and leadership throughout her high school career. She maintained her major status while challenging herself with high-level courses such as AP Biology and a URI dual enrollment pre-calculus course. Currently, she is pursuing an EMT certification through her Healthcare Careers CTE program. As an active member of the Davies basketball and volleyball teams, Seoanne embodies the spirit of teamwork and perseverance. She aspires to a career in pediatric oncology, having completed an extensive Davies work-based learning experience in the field and gaining additional experience as a Future Gen Cancer Fellow at Brown University. A prominent member of the Senior Class Council, Seoanne brings her outgoing and outspoken nature to every endeavor, making her a beloved presence in her community. His curiosity and determination shine through in all his activities, as evidenced by his obtaining a black belt in Taekwondo. Seoanne’s impressive skills and accomplishments make her a remarkable individual who will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact in her future endeavors.

Paige Reynolds, Ponaganset High School

Paige Reynolds is a senior at Ponaganset High School. Paige excels in all four areas of the PHS vision of the qualities of a graduate learner. As PHS FFA Chapter President and RI State FFA President, she is a valuable citizen within our school community. She is the type of learner who is motivated and excels academically. She seeks solutions that will benefit everyone and promotes an inclusive FFA chapter where all members feel welcome. She recently won the RI FFA State Public Speaking Competition.

Angelica Moreno, Achievement First Providence High School

Angelica, a high school senior from Providence, is committed to creating a positive, hard-working narrative for herself and her high school. A founding member of Providence High, Angelica is preparing to be part of the first graduating class here at PHS. Along the way, she accomplished so much in and out of the classroom. In the classroom, Angelica took many AP courses. She is dedicated to working hard and excelling in everything she does. One of her teachers says she is ready to approach any activity or assignment with an open mind and good humor. With a 4.0 this year, it is clear that she approaches all her courses with the same will and the same open-mindedness. Whether or not the task at hand is something that would otherwise interest her, she consistently chooses to take what she can from it and engage with it in a way that she can be proud of.

As for some of her extracurricular activities, Angelica is part of the Yearbook Club, Brown University Math Circle, and works part-time. As an athlete, Angelica helped form PHS’s first volleyball team and rose to become a team captain, helping the team win its first-ever match in school history as part of the brand new volleyball program. Besides sport, Angelica wants to be a pillar in her community. She is a young member of her church and volunteers to help unhoused people. Angelica exemplifies what it means to be a PHS Falcon!

Hope Wholey, South Kingstown Secondary School

The Department of Social Studies has nominated Hope Wholey as a candidate for Providence Journal Student of the Week. Hope is an exceptional student who has demonstrated excellence both academically and athletically. She has been a member of the women’s soccer team for four years, serving as captain. At South Kingstown High School, she took seven social studies classes, including four Advanced Placement classes. Hope is a natural problem solver, always eager to help her peers achieve their goals. She quickly understands new concepts and actively uses her critical thinking skills. His insightful contributions often improve the quality of class discussions.
