Ukraine says Russia launched an intercontinental missile in an attack for the first time since the war.

LONDON — Russia launched an intercontinental ballistic missile on Thursday towards Ukrainekyiv officials said, but a Western official told ABC News the attack did not appear to be an ICBM.

Rather, it was a ballistic missile targeting Dnipro, in southeastern Ukraine, the Western official said.

The claim was not immediately confirmed by Moscow, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declining to comment, saying questions on the matter should instead be directed to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The launch of an ICBM, if confirmed, would come amid fears of an escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine’s military launched U.S.-made ATACMS missiles for the first time this week toward targets in Russia, days after U.S. President Joe Biden authorized such use of the long-range weapons.

All the missiles were launched in about two hours, starting around 5 a.m., Ukraine said.

All targeted businesses and critical infrastructure, but only the missile that Ukraine identified as an ICBM hit the city. The other six missiles were shot down, Ukraine said. No casualties or significant damage were reported, authorities said.
