The High Court (HC) today (November 3) granted an application to prepare the paper book to appeal the 7-year prison sentence of BNP president and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

A High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain passed the order after Begum Zia’s lawyers submitted the petition.

Senior advocate Joynul Abedin, advocate Kaiser Kamal, advocate Md Ruhul Kuddus Kajol, advocate Aminul Islam and advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajol proposed the post of BNP chairman.

Senior lawyer Joynul Abedin said Begum Khaleda Zia did not ask for any favors as she wanted the matter to be settled legally.

“We therefore wish to appeal to the court against the order of conviction passed against her in the corruption case. The court concerned has granted our request to prepare the paper file of the case at our own cost,” said Abedin.

A court granted seven years in prison to begum Khaleda Zia and three others in the corruption case in October 2018.

The court also fined them and directed the authorities concerned to forfeit 42 kathas of land purchased for the trust from the government.

Later, Begum Zia appealed the judgment to the High Court.

She did not get justice, as the court denied her bail under the fallen fascist government, and at one point she was released on conditional bail by government decree.

But Begum Khaleda Zia was released from prison on August 6 under a decree following a joint meeting with President Mohammed Shahabuddin and heads of the three services, leaders of different political parties, representatives of civil society and leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement. in Bangabhaban on August 5.

Former Prime Minister and fascist Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina fled the country in the face of a mass uprising led by the anti-discrimination student movement on August 5.
