Topeka will have a new representative in Congress next year: Derek Schmidt.

Kansas has four seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and three elections have incumbents running for re-election – all of whom won. But one race — the 2nd Congressional District, which includes Topeka — had no incumbent candidate. None of the state’s U.S. senators are running this year.

Polls closed at 7 p.m. and unofficial election results are now available. But mail-in ballots and provisional ballots can be counted for a period after Election Day. Final statewide results will not be official until they are certified by the State Board of Canvassers, which typically occurs at the end of the month.

2nd Congressional District: Derek Schmidt defeats Nancy Boyda

Shawnee County is the most populous region in Kansas. 2nd Congressional Districtwhich features a three-way race among Republican Derek Schmidt, Democrat Nancy Boyda and Libertarian John Hauer. Schmidt, of Independence, is the former attorney general and previously a state senator. Boyda, of Baldwin City, served one term in Congress two decades ago. Hauer is from Topeka.

The Associated Press called the races for Schmidt at 10:13 p.m.

Schmidt declared victory shortly before 10 p.m.

“Thank you to the voters of Kansas’ 2nd Congressional District who made our victory possible tonight!” Schmidt said in a statement. “Our great nation has serious problems, and we need serious people to solve them. As a Member of Congress, I will work hard every day to faithfully represent our citizens as we work with our fellow Americans to solve them.

“As I said in announcing my candidacy, what is best for our district and for America will always be my constant guide. I will immediately begin preparing so that on day one – January 3, 2025 – we May we get right to work securing our border, lowering the high cost of living, reducing regulatory burden, and addressing the many other priorities that Kansans have told me are important to our great country. Thank you for this opportunity to serve, and God bless America!

Boyda had admitted defeat shortly before.

“Earlier this evening, I called Derek and offered him my concession in our race. I wished him luck and expressed my hope that he would do his best to listen to all sides as he faces the tough questions that will challenge the next Congress,” Boyda said in a speech. statement. “I wish him all the best as our next representative.

“For the sake of our democracy, I can hope that the next Congress will take the matter of governing seriously and put aside the divisive positions that tear us apart.”

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Jake LaTurner, R-Kan., has decided not to run for re-election in that district representing Topeka and much of the eastern third of Kansas, minus most of metro Kansas City.

The district favored Republicans. LaTurner won by 16 percentage points in 2022.

1st Congressional District: Tracey Mann is re-elected

Republican U.S. Rep. Tracey Mann, of Salina, is the incumbent in this district representing the western half of the state as well as north-central Kansas extending east to Lawrence. He is challenged by Democrat Paul Buskirk of Lawrence.

The district favored Republicans. Mann won by 36 percentage points in 2022.

The Associated Press called the race for Mann at 9:41 p.m.

3rd Congressional District: Sharice Davids is re-elected

Democratic U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, of Roeland Park, is the incumbent in this district that represents most of the Kansas City metro area, including all of Johnson County, as well as some rural areas in neighboring counties. She is challenged by Republican Prasanth Reddy, of Lenexa, and Libertarian Steve Roberts, of Overland Park.

The district favored Democrats in the last election. Davids won by 12 percentage points in 2022.

The Associated Press had not called the race as of 10 p.m., Davids declared victory shortly after 10 p.m.

“This victory belongs to all of us. It reflects our commitment to transcend our differences and focus on what unites us,” Davids said in a statement. “Together, we will continue to fight for the issues that matter most to Kansans, ensuring that every voice – from Kansas City to Kincaid – is heard in the halls of Congress.

“It’s an honor to be your representative and I’m committed to delivering real results for our community, from reducing everyday costs to protecting reproductive freedoms. Thank you for your trust – our work continues!

Reddy conceded defeat in a post on X at 10:16 p.m.

“I lived the American dream and decided to run for Congress because we need leaders who will work every day to ensure the American dream for future generations.

“Over the past year, I have traveled across Kansas’ 3rd District, listening to what people care about, and speaking up about real solutions. It has been the honor of my life, and even though tonight’s outcome is not the one we wanted, I’m very grateful to everyone who supported us on this journey.

“I congratulate Sharice Davids on her victory. The values ​​we campaigned for remain, and this is not the end of our fight.”

4th Congressional District: Ron Estes is re-elected

Republican U.S. Rep. Ron Estes of Wichita is the incumbent in this district, representing Wichita and much of south-central Kansas. He is challenged by Democrat Esau Freeman, of Sedgwick.

The district favored Republicans. Estes won by 26 percentage points in 2022.

The Associated Press called the race at 10:03 p.m.
