Lily-Rose Depp on Proving Haters Wrong and Finding Your Own Identity in Hollywood: ‘I’m Just Going to Work’

Lily-Rose Depp recently opened up about her determination to prove her critics wrong and fight for success in Hollywood. Lily-Rose, daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, has faced public skepticism about her prospects in show business.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Depp has strongly defended her choice to adopt a career in acting by following in her father’s footsteps in the film industry. For the children of Hollywood stars, it’s not easy to grow up watching others flourish while they are suspected. Depp has responded quite harshly to the industry criticism that has been leveled at him since the start of his acting career.

Depp told the publication: “I feel like people have been willing to see me fail, in some way, ever since I was a kid. It made me want to work harder and prove to the people that they’re wrong Not in a vindictive way at all, but just in the sense of fueling my fire, I want to prove that I’m a hard worker, and I’m only here to work hard.

Pursuing an artistic career often creates barriers that are difficult to overcome, and for Depp, she is constantly evolving toward a better version of herself. The criticism that comes her way is just a small obstacle in the grand scheme of things as she instead embraces the art of acting. She added: “You can either sit there and cry and say, ‘That’s not fair!’ or you can say, ‘Okay, I’m just going to work really, really hard and do my best.’

She worked tirelessly to turn these criticisms into mere challenges that could be resolved. Having started her acting career with the French thriller Planetarium in 2016, alongside Natalie Portman, Depp went on to deliver a stellar performance in The Idol (2023) alongside The Weeknd and Troye Sivan. She also starred in The King alongside Timothée Chalamet and Robert Pattinson in 2019.

Lily-Rose Depp next appears in Nosferatu, directed by Rob Eggers, alongside a stellar cast including Bill Skarsgård, Emma Corrin, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and more. She told the outlet: “Rob was one of my priority list directors. I didn’t think I would be able to work with him this early, this early in my career.” The film arrives on December 25, 2024.
