Alan Shearer claims new Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim could ‘step up’ to a star

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer believes new Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim could opt to sell Marcus Rashford in the next two transfer windows.

The Red Devils decided to sack Erik ten Hag on Monday before acting quickly to bring in his successor. in the form of Sporting Lisbon head coach Amorim.

Man Utd have made a terrible start to the Premier League season with the Red Devils sitting in 13th position ahead of their clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

Amorim will inherit a team that has won just three of their nine Premier League matches this season, with only newly-promoted Southampton scoring fewer goals than them this season.

Rashford, who scored 30 goals in 56 appearances in Ten Hag’s first season at Old Trafford, has been on a barren run since, scoring just eight goals in his last 42 Premier League matches for Man Utd.

The England international has scored just one league goal this season and Shearer believes Amorim may have seen enough to convince him to sell the Man Utd academy product.

Shearer said Betfair: “Ruben Amorim will have his own ideas. He will determine who he wants to keep and who he wants to put aside.

“Marcus Rashford is the one he needs to think about and do well. Does he keep it or does he seek to develop it?

“There’s no doubt about the ability there – the 30 or so goals he scored a few years ago tells you there’s ability there – but will Amorim be able to get him back again and give him confidence?

“It’s just a matter of where Marcus is at the time and whether he wants to do it. We haven’t seen him enough lately and why, I don’t know because we’re not inside the football club.

On his overall feeling on Amorim’s appointment to Man Utd, Shearer added: “Sporting are obviously a very big club but nowhere near as big as Man United, who are one of, if not the biggest big club in the world.

“You can see the reaction, the scrutiny and the intensity that is put on this club every week. He looks very promising, very good, and you can’t argue with the work he’s done at Sporting, but it’s definitely a step up at Manchester United.

“If he is the man to take charge, then you would think the team can improve quite quickly; there is no doubt that Man United are better than 14th in the Premier League. It remains to be seen how good they can be.

“Without additions, I doubt they will be in the top four at this stage. We’ll have to wait and see if they can do business in January but they are much better than 14th place.

Predicting the score when Man Utd – who will be managed by Ruud van Nistelrooy – take on Chelsea on Sunday, Shearer continued: “When one manager leaves and another arrives, there will be a different atmosphere, a renewed hope and confidence at Old Trafford on Sunday, with or without Amorim, especially after Man United scored five goals in the Carabao Cup.

“There will be more hope in this weekend’s game than last week against West Ham and that could really energize the players on the pitch.

“I was at St James’ for Chelsea’s midweek trip, and it was a completely different team to the Championship game between the two, and the team he presents against Man United will be different again.

“It’s hard to follow and that’s probably why I’m going for a draw. I want both teams to score because both teams can improve defensively.

“The added detail of a new manager in the dugout at Old Trafford for the first time in the Premier League, whether it’s Ruben or Ruud, means United can take something from this game.”
