DETROIT (FOX 2) – Michigan is one of seven key states expected to decide who the next president of the United States will be.

The race for the 47th president isn’t just huge in Michigan: It’s drawing national attention as a former president. President Donald Trump And Vice President Kamala Harris are in a tight race for the Oval Office.

Harris, the first Black woman and first woman of South Asian descent to be a major party nominee, was elevated to the top of the Democratic ticket when President Joe Biden dropped out of the race following a disastrous debate end of June. Since securing the Democratic nomination, Harris chose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate in August.

Trump, meanwhile, has been the Republican front-runner for several years and had been planning a third White House bid since losing his re-election bid in 2020. He chose Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate in July, just two days before Biden resigned.

When will we know who won the election?

Michigan’s secretary of state said the first round of votes would include both already-counted mail-in ballots and early votes, which total about 3.3 million.

After that, the Election Day vote will be reported to county boards as well as the state. As the night goes on, the election winners and losers will be projected.

Jocelyn Benson told reporters earlier Tuesday that turnout is expected to be higher than in 2020, which saw one of the highest volumes of votes cast in years.

Benson said election operations went smoothly except for a few disruptions at a polling place in Northville Township. due to a gas leak. Arrests also took place after the discovery of individuals making threats of political violence.

Those who closely monitor election results advise against making assumptions about the incoming numbers and what they mean. Incomplete data from counties that are still receiving precinct numbers can portend uncertainty about the outcome of an election.
