I’m voting Harris. Trump’s cruelty will harm people. Again

Leaving aside politics, qualifications, and even personalities, completely ignoring what I think Harris will do as president, I’m picking her for what she won’t do.

play

I’m voting proudly and loudly for Vice President Kamala Harris, and the simplest reason is this: as president, Donald Trump will hurt people I care.

We are at a tortuous moment in American history where voters must consider a presidential candidate who we know will harm others, tear communities apartwill take the rights of the people we love. We know this because he said it proudly and loudly.

But that’s where we find ourselves on the eve of Election Day – a twisted place.

Harris is an easy choice over Trump – he will really hurt many

Certainly, I’m ideologically aligned with Harris, and the policies she and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, have proposed are pushing America in the direction I think it should go. Towards greater compassion. Towards equity. Towards inclusiveness.

But putting aside politics, qualifications, and even personalities, completely ignoring what I think Harris will do as president, I’m picking her for what she won’t do.

Mass deportation is unacceptable, inhumane and un-American

It will not implement a draconian plan of mass deportation. Trump will do it, and he will do it involve nets in communities across the country this will undoubtedly sweep away immigrants who are here legally.

This will involve detention camps full of human beings, most of whom worked and contributed to the prosperity of their city, people who came here in search of a better future. People that Trump has wrongly demonized as criminals and terrorists.

Know the inhuman chaos Trump created his family separation policy when he was president, there is every reason to believe that his mass expulsion plan will be a humanitarian disaster. Families who have lived in this country for years will be tornand the social fabric will be shredded with cruel intent.

Everything will be fine. I will not be deported. But I’ll be damned if I support anyone who would even consider such a thing.

Trump targets transgender children with hatred

I chose Harris because she will not dehumanize America’s transgender community. She won’t make life hell for transgender youth and their familiessomething Trump, with his repeated transphobic attacks, has made clear he will do.

A marginalized community that already has an incredibly high standard depression and suicide rates was targeted by Trump and denounced for political purposes. Who does this?

How could I look at friends whose children are transgender, or my own children who have transgender friends, and say that I would tolerate such a thing?

I will not tolerate it. This disgusts me. And I certainly won’t vote for someone who has already done so, with hateful words and languagedamaged children who just want to be who they really are.

Abortion rights are at stake and Trump will hurt women

I chose Harris because she will fight to help women find the rights they lost when Roe v. Wade was canceled. Trump won’t do that. He bragged about having the law overturned.

At best, it will allow states to maintain a reckless mix of laws that endanger the lives and well-being of women.

At worst, he will follow the path advocated by many in his party – a national ban on abortion.

I will not be part of such a thing.

I will not support a man who thinks women’s rights can be restricted – anywhere.

Healthcare, veterans benefits, LGBTQ+ rights: all at stake

I’m choosing Harris because Trump and the Republican Party will try again to eliminate Obamacareputting millions of people at risk of losing their health care or returning to a time when pre-existing conditions prevented them from obtaining decent insurance.

I chose Harris because, frankly, the reasons listed above are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the harm a second Trump administration would cause people. Project 2025, the conservative plan for a second term for Trumppropose cuts to veterans’ disability benefitsguts the social safety net And attacks LGBTQ+ rights.

Your vote doesn’t just impact you. Choose wisely.

If Trump wins, there’s a good chance I’ll be fine. I am a white man. I’m straight. I was raised Catholic. I’m not poor.

But being good personally doesn’t matter much when good people are hurt. And make no mistake, good people will be hurt if Trump is elected.

That alone is more than enough reason for me to support Harris.

This election, summed up, is decency versus indecency. The choice couldn’t be clearer.
