What time does daylight saving time end? When is it? When we fold this weekend

It’s all about to be over.

No, not Election Daywhich arrives later this week. But summer timethe biannual time change that affects millions of Americans.

On Sunday at 2 a.m. local time, the clocks in most, but not all, states will “go back” an hour, giving people an extra hour of sleep and allowing more daylight in the morning.

The time change affects the daily lives of hundreds of millions of Americans, causing time changes, thereby contributing to less sleep in the days that follow and, of course, the sunsets earlier.

Here’s what you need to know about when daylight saving time ends.

Halloween and Daylight Saving Time: How the Holidays Changed Time (Sort of)

What is daylight saving time?

Daylight saving time is the period between March and November when most Americans set their clocks forward one hour.

We gain an hour in November (unlike waste an hour in spring) to benefit from more natural light on winter mornings. When we “advance” in March, it is to add more daylight in the evening. In the Northern Hemisphere, the autumnal equinox is Sunday, September 22, marking the start of the fall season.

When does daylight saving time end in 2024?

Daylight Saving Time will end for the year on Sunday, November 3, when we “turn back” and gain an extra hour of sleep.

Next year, it will start again on Sunday March 9, 2025.

Exactly what time does daylight saving time end?

The clocks will “go back” one hour at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, November 3.

When did DST start in 2024?

Daylight saving time began in 2024 on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. local time, when our clocks moved forward one hour, as part of the biannual time change.

Does every state observe daylight saving time?

Not all US states and territories participate in summer time.

Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time. Due to its desert climate, Arizona does not follow daylight saving time (except Navajo Nation). After most of the United States passed the Uniform Time Act, the state felt there was no good reason to adjust clocks so that sunset occurred an hour later during hottest months of the year.

There are also five other U.S. territories that do not participate:

  • American Samoa

  • Guam

  • Northern Mariana Islands

  • Puerto Rico

  • US Virgin Islands

The Navajo Nation, located in parts of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico, observes daylight saving time.

Hawaii is the other state that does not observe daylight saving time. Due to its proximity to the equator, there is not much variation between daylight hours during the year.

Is daylight saving time ending?

The idea of stopping changing time was brought to Congress in recent years, when the U.S. Senate unanimously approved the Sun Protection Act in 2022, a bill aimed at perpetuating summer time.

Although the Sun Protection Act was unanimously passed by the Senate in 2022, the United States House of Representatives did not pass it and President Joe Biden did not sign it.

A 2023 version of the law also remained inactive in Congress.

In a press release issued Monday, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio made another push in favor of perpetuating summer time.

The senator suggested that the nation “stop putting up with the ridiculous and antiquated practice of changing clocks back and forth. Let’s finally pass my Sun Protection Act and end the need to ‘turn back’ and ‘ move forward’ for good.
