“Unprecedented” amount of illegal marijuana seized by border agents

An “unprecedented” amount of marijuana was seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Philadelphia.

CBP officers discovered a 170-pound shipment of marijuana worth $800,000 while inspecting export packages at an international shipping service. The 35 packages were sent from various addresses in California and were destined for several locations in London, United Kingdom.

Seizing 35 marijuana export packages in one day is “unusual,” according to CBP officers in Philadelphia. Due to the potency of the drug, the drug could fetch two to three times more in London.

“Although the medical and recreational use of marijuana is decriminalized in some U.S. states, the possession and smuggling of marijuana remains illegal under federal law, and Customs and Border Protection officers will therefore continue to seize when we encounter them,” said CBP’s Cleatus Hunt. regional port director of the Philadelphia Regional Port.

“We have seen an unprecedented number of marijuana export packages, but these are also packages that consumers in London will not see.”

No information has yet been released on this subject, but investigations are continuing.

U.S. CBP officers typically find that marijuana is exported in smaller packages, as in this case. However, they sometimes encounter travelers with suitcases full of drugs.

Two weeks ago, U.S. CBP officers in Philadelphia discovered 114 pounds of marijuana hidden in vacuum-sealed bags in four suitcases of two women who were trying to board a flight to London.

Fredo, a 2-year-old German Shepherd and CBP-trained narcotics detection dog, alerted officers to the presence of the illegal substance in the sealed bags.

In June, U.S. CBP officers assigned to the World Trade Bridge in Texas seized marijuana worth more than $5 million.

Last year, U.S. CBP officers seized an average of 2,339 pounds of dangerous drugs at the country’s air, sea and land ports of entry.

Law enforcement seized 175,000 pounds of marijuana in the 2023-2024 fiscal year. It is the most commonly seized drug by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, followed by methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl.

Americans in four states were lucky enough to vote for legalization Tuesday, either recreational or medical marijuana.

Recreational marijuana was on the ballot in North Dakota, South Dakota and Florida, and medical marijuana was up for a vote in Nebraska.

Nebraska voted to pass marijuana legislation, while Florida rejected recreational marijuana on its ballot. Although 55.9 percent of Floridians voted in favor of the amendmentit did not pass, because the state set a 60 percent threshold for referendums to pass.

Although medical marijuana is legal in North Dakota, supporters of Measure 5, which sought to “legalize the recreational or personal use of marijuana,” failed to pass the bill.

In South Dakota, the legislation did not pass Action initiated 29which would “legalize the recreational or personal use of marijuana.”
