Aston Martin engineers ‘didn’t have the courage’ to admit Lawrence Stroll’s vital mistake this season

Lawrence Stroll has developed a fearsome reputation within Formula 1. The billionaire is feverishly ambitious, determined to make Aston Martin a world champion rather than a plucky midfield operator.

Stroll has been present in the F1 paddock since his son Lance’s Walk joined Williams in 2017. A year later, he bought the Force India team, which later became Racing Point.

Lance duly joined the Silverstone team, known as Aston Martin since the start of 2021. Last season was their best yet as they scored 280 points and eight podiums, throughout the year. Fernando Alonso.

And although they are on course to maintain fifth place this season, they have regressed somewhat alarmingly. They haven’t managed a single podium, with just one top six since the Canadian GP in June.

After a major Emilia Romagna GP upgrade failed, Stroll got ‘pretty loud’ behind the scenes. The team is unlikely to challenge for wins or titles until at least 2026 (when the sport will see major changes to regulations), but it is clearly eager after a huge investment.

Stroll invests £783m in Aston Martin hoping to make it a favorite. He also recruited world-renowned engineers like Adrian Newey, Andy Cowell and Enrico Cardile.

Aston Martin engineers didn’t want to admit they took the wrong direction with the AMR24

Aston Martin introduced a completely new floor for the United States Grand Prix, which it was hoped would work on all tracks. But according to Auto, Motor and Sportit was a “complete failure”.

The bounce returned and the car became even more unstable in corners. Similar to Mercedes, Aston rides with a particularly low ride height in hopes of generating downforce, but that means a narrower working window.

Aston Martin engineers turned the cars into “monsters”, but they “didn’t have the courage” to admit it to Lawrence Stroll. The sensible solution would have been to revert to an earlier specification and correct the errors.

Instead, they “continued to take wrong turns on wrong bases.” Although it was a mutual decision, the technical director Dan Fallows was effectively demotedperhaps with Newey’s contribution.

The sign that Lawrence Stroll may finally see Lance Stroll as the problem

One would imagine that there is an obvious point of tension between Stroll senior and the engineering team. While he might rightly question why the team has lost so much ground in the development race – for the second year in a row – he would argue that a stronger second driver would yield better results and more returns. useful.

Stroll has had some great achievements in F1, including his pole position at the 2020 Turkish GP and three podium finishes, and has beaten Alonso six times in qualifying and racing this year. But its problem is inconsistency.

Former Haas boss Guenther Steiner doesn’t think Stroll wants to be in F1. He suspects he is on the grid only because of his father’s dream.

The team owner may now have realized that this arrangement would not work. Aston Martin could redeploy Stroll to endurance racing and sign Yuki Tsunoda instead.
