‘They’re getting serious, man’: Chicago Med’s Steven Weber talks Season 10’s changes with a new showrunner taking over

Chicago Med entered a new era with its tenth season TV schedule 2024with long-time showrunners Diana Frolov and Andy Schneider resigns and Allen MacDonald joins A Chicago for the most important position in the medical drama. MacDonald spoke with CinemaBlend ahead of season 10 about how he prepared to take over this show nine seasons and nearly 200 episodes. Now, shortly before the fall finale, I asked star Steven Weber about the new status quo, and he didn’t hold back.

And Steven Weber was a great person to ask that question, because Dr. Archer has been through some trials this season, starting with learning that he would have to share duties as head of the emergency department with Dr. Lenox and, most recently, being demoted to assistant. After explaining how hard it is to “not take it personally” When viewers reacted poorly to his character, I asked what season 10 was like with Allen MacDonald as the new showrunner, and he shared:

Andy and Diane took this show and made it into a beautiful, exciting and moving world. They built Chicago Med, they built Gaffney. They really did it, and so did everyone involved, and they were incredibly gracious in passing the torch to Allen McDonald and producer Anna Decosa. They took over and ran with it. Sorry for that metaphor, but they really did it, and they decided to take what already definitely wasn’t broken and make it worse and go further than us, and this series is, looking forward to more on one occasion, gone very far. It’s now Chicago Med’s daily exploration. They’re getting hard, man.

Of the three One Chicago shows, Medical was actually the only one with the original showrunners still on board at the end of the 2023-2024 television season, as Fireis Andrea Newman and PDGwen Sigan of , were both producers before being given the reins as showrunners. With the departures of Andy Schneider and Diane Frolov, Medical explores new and more difficult directions. We see more personal stories. We’re seeing more stories of people who have always been there, like nurses, and it’s really fantastic. And I think it’s smart, because the audience is smart. They love their comfort food. Believe me, I’m one of them, but if you raise the bar, they will come. Allen and Anna are raising the bar, and the public is there for it, as our ratings attest. People really love the show and come to it and look forward to it, not just for the comfort, but they’re excited about it. This is a function of our new writers.

Archer’s “personal stories” in Season 10 have certainly been more difficult, ranging from his relationship with his son to his struggles at work with Lenox. These struggles came to a head when he more or less gave Goodwin an ultimatum regarding choose between him or Lenox as ED leaderand he didn’t get the answer he was looking for. In the promo for the fall finale, we even see him telling Hannah that he wrote a resignation letter. Take a look:

Of course, the fact that Archer is writing a resignation letter is far from guaranteeing that he will resign from the hospital by the time the final credits roll. If anything, the preview that he’ll tell Hannah about it is a good sign. Not only are they used to helping each other through difficult times, but Allen MacDonald was a fan of their dynamicwith the showrunner telling CinemaBlend earlier this year that Hannah and Archer are “the ones who each go to each other in times of emotional need or when they need to talk about something.”

Based on the promo, there are also plenty of other events to deal with in the fall finale, not the least of which is the return of Sarah Reese for the first time since Season 4 debuted in 2018 and solving the murder plot against Goodwin.
