Steve Bannonformer White House advisor and key media strategist to the former president Donald Trump was released from federal custody Tuesday after serving four months for contempt of Congress.

Bannon was released from the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, early Tuesday morning. The top MAGA influencer had been convicted of defying a subpoena from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

Upon entering prison in July, Bannon described himself as a “political prisoner,” promising to oppose the attorney general. Merrick Garland and what he called a “corrupt” Justice Department.

Bannon’s conviction stems from his refusal to cooperate with the House committee’s investigation into the January 6, 2021, riots at the Capitol. In 2022, a jury found Bannon guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress: one for failing to provide requested documents and another for refusing to testify before the committee.

According to its representativesBannon is expected to hold a news conference in Manhattan on Tuesday evening. He should also resume his War room podcast.

Bannon’s legal battles continue, however. In December, he will stand trial in New York state on separate charges, where he is accused of defrauding donors in a campaign to build a wall along the U.S. border and Mexico. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of fraud, money laundering and conspiracy.
