Overhaul of Lift Station 1 in Steinbach: What to expect from the project – SteinbachOnline.com

The Town of Steinbach is moving forward with significant improvements to its Main Lift Station, a critical piece of infrastructure that manages both stormwater and wastewater for the growing community. City Chief Engineer Aaron Rach provided details on the project, emphasizing the scope and importance of the improvements.

“This project is quite similar to the Loewen Lift Station project in that they both involve the installation of a wastewater discharge line, as well as upgrades to pumps, piping, controls and instrumentation of existing stations,” explained Rach. “The main components of the force are similar, but this project covers a much greater distance.”

Rach also highlighted the benefits of the Lift Station 1 site. “This lift station site is much larger and capable of accommodating the contractor’s activities than the Loewen site was for the construction of the building “, he said.

Given the essential role that Lift Station 1 plays in the city’s infrastructure, the project is of great importance. “This is the city’s main lift station that collects all of the city’s wastewater. The criticality of the installation is therefore higher than that of the Loewen lifting station,” added Rach.

He noted that the city will have to carefully manage wastewater flows throughout the project because there is no gravity sewer system to temporarily discharge it to. Arranging the main force facility early in the project will help manage incoming flows and facilitate sequencing of building improvements.

Although there will be some short-term lane closures along Park Road West while the water main is installed, Rach assured that impacts to residents will be minimal.

“Aside from some potential short-term lane closures along Park Road West, impacts to residents are expected to be minimal,” he said. “The site is large enough to accommodate the contractor’s activities and minimize disruption.”

The City Council recently approved a contract to design these critical improvements. On Tuesday, November 5, the City Council awarded Associated Engineering a contract worth $529,789.89 plus tax to design the Lift Station 1 improvements and the Force Main twinning project.

After the contract award, Councilor Michael Zwaagstra emphasized the importance of the project for Steinbach’s growing infrastructure. “This is obviously a significant project, the upgrade of Lift Station 1 and the Force Main twinning,” Zwaagstra said. “When we have a project of this size, we have to make sure everything is well designed before we can begin work. »

Once design work is complete, the City will move forward with construction to improve Lift Station 1, ensuring the City can effectively manage stormwater and wastewater for years to come.
