Tornado briefly sweeps through northern Oakland County

HOLLY, Mich. – Oakland County experienced a rare November tornado Sunday evening.

While authorities are still investigating storm damage, the National Weather Service has been gathering information about the tornado.

Relatively weak tornado, didn’t last very long

According to the National Weather Service, a line of thunderstorms moving through the Detroit metro area on November 10, 2024 brought a short-lived EF-0 to Holly just before 7 p.m.

Within two minutes, the tornado traveled about a mile and winds reached 70 mph. At its largest, it was approximately 50 meters wide.

Where did he go?

Authorities said the hurricane started in a swampy area and tracked northeast to Holly before dissipating near the center of town.

The damage he left

The tornado damaged trees, construction sites and the exteriors of several buildings. Police urged residents to watch out for downed trees and the possibility of downed power lines.

Holly Police and Fire Officials secure dangerous areas. Some areas were blocked off as assessments progressed.

American Legion Post 149 was directly in the path of the tornado and was closed on Veterans Day due to damage. The ceremonies took place outside.

According to American Legion Post 149the tornado created a large crack in its south wall that reached the interior of the building. They believe the roof may have been briefly lifted off its concrete walls, due to the amount of leaves and other debris found inside the building.

Were there any injuries?

No injuries were reported as a result of the tornado and storm damage, according to the Holly Fire Chief.

What to do if you find downed power lines

Always assume that downed power lines are active and dangerous.

Stay at least 20 feet from downed power lines and keep children and pets indoors.

You can report downed lines to DTE Energy by calling 800-477-4747 or to Consumers Energy by calling 800-477-5050.

If you believe the downed power line poses an immediate danger to the public, you should call 911.

Fallen live wires may twist, spark, or arc as they seek ground. Live wires that have found their ground may not move at all or make any noise, but they are still dangerous.
