Diwali 2024: Bengaluru City Police introduces eco-friendly safety measures for using crackers in city – Bangalore News

Ahead of the Diwali festival, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B Dayanand has issued important guidelines to ensure a safe and eco-friendly celebration. With an annual average of 150 to 200 firecracker-related incidents, the commissioner stressed the need for precautions and responsible behavior on the part of residents.

In line with environmental concerns, the commissioner urged citizens to use only green and environment-friendly firecrackers. “The aim is to celebrate a safe Diwali while being considerate of the environment and the community,” he said.

Additionally, the guidelines emphasize special attention to the safety of children, discouraging their participation in lighting firecrackers. Parents are advised to supervise children and ensure that they do not handle dangerous objects.

Busy areas are strictly prohibited from bursting firecrackers in order to prevent accidents and ensure public safety. Additionally, the commissioner reminded citizens to avoid causing distress to animals, which can be negatively affected by loud noises. As per the Supreme Court guidelines, firecrackers can only be burst between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The guidelines also state that cleanliness is a priority. Residents are reminded to clean up after firecrackers burst, to ensure public spaces remain tidy and safe for all. In response to the expected demand for firecrackers, temporary licenses were issued to sellers. Applications were accepted online and licenses were granted for 315 stalls across 74 locations across the city, with rigorous safety measures implemented to prevent accidents.

To further promote safety, the Commissioner provided specific advice to the public, including:

1. Buy green firecrackers: Residents are advised to buy eco-friendly firecrackers, to ensure that they celebrate a cleaner Diwali. They must also scan QR codes when making purchases to verify authenticity.

2. Use licensed sellers: Firecrackers should only be purchased from authorized sellers displaying their licenses, avoiding unauthorized sellers.

3. Avoid high noise and pollution: Firecrackers that create excessive noise or air pollution should not be purchased as they may disturb people and animals.

4. Supervise children: Parents should closely monitor children, prevent them from lighting firecrackers and ensure their safety.

5. Respect locations and timings: Firecrackers should be used in open areas, away from hospitals, gas stations and residential areas, while strictly adhering to the designated times set by the Supreme Court.

6. Wear protective gear: Safety precautions such as wearing gloves, eye protection, and keeping water or a fire extinguisher nearby are essential to prevent accidents.

7. Immediate reporting of incidents: In the event of an accident, residents are requested to immediately contact the emergency services by dialing 112 or 108.

The commissioner’s guidelines aim to foster an atmosphere of celebration while prioritizing the safety and well-being of the community. Citizens are encouraged to take these measures seriously, thereby ensuring a happy and responsible Diwali for all.
