Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre pledges to eliminate the GST on new homes sold for less than $1 million if his party wins the next federal election.

The Conservative leader made the announcement early Monday morning in a campaign-style video posted online and is hosting a media event at 10 a.m. ET in Ottawa to provide more details.

Conservatives say the move will save Canadians $40,000 on an $800,000 home and spur the construction of 30,000 more homes in Canada each year.

This announcement is based on a previous commitment by Poilievre to remove the GST on the construction of any new home where the rental price is below market value.

In September last year, the Liberal government announced it was removing the GST on new rental housing projects.

He said the move meant someone buying a two-bedroom rental unit valued at $500,000 would receive a tax break of about $25,000.
